Intelligent Design: Analyzing User Stories Like Stocks

The practice of software development is evolving. In the past decade we’ve seen the widespread adoption of agile and UX practices. Agile has focused mainly on development, not requirements analysis and design. The Lean Startup movement and its focus on empirical hypothesis testing is changing this. We’ll discuss how you can improve your requirements process to more efficiently test ideas by applying methods from UX and finance when evaluating stories in your product backlog, your “idea portfolio”.
Jon Innes is founder of UX Innovation LLC, a product design management consultancy that specializes in helping companies improve their design & research practices. His experience spans a wide variety of domains including consumer and enterprise software, consumer hardware, IT projects, and e-commerce website design. Jon has led UX projects for several members of the Fortune 1000, including Intuit, SAP, & Cisco, both as a consultant and a member of an in-house team. He is also a Certified Scrum Product Owner, with extensive experience integrating Agile and UX in both large distributed teams and early stage startups. Jon frequently speaks at conferences such as ACM CHI, the Usability Professionals Association, and Agile 2011. He is also the author of several articles in UX trade magazines like Interactions and was a contributing author to the book User-Centered Design Stories: Real World UCD Case Studies.
